What is Swagbucks?

Swagbucks is an online rewards program where users can earn virtual points that can be cashed in for real rewards like gift cards. Points can be earned from web functions that you typically perform on a regular basis.

The rest of the Swagbucks review will be focused on helping you decide if this program is right for you.

Overview: The Swagbucks Review

How to Earn Points: Points can be earned by doing everyday web activity that you are probably already doing. Here are some of the most common ways to earn points:

  • Playing Games
  • Web Searches
  • Online Purchases

Claiming Swagbucks Rewards

The rewards are typically gift cards for large retail stores like Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. There are several different categories with different retailers in each.

Before you rush to sign up I need to give you a realistic expectation of the conversion rate of a Swagbuck to actual currency. I calculated that each point is worth $0.01 (2,500 points will get you a $25 Visa Rewards Card, which comes out to 1 point = $0.01). Some of the gift cards offer a slightly better rate, but not by much. I use the Visa card because this can be used anywhere so it has the highest value to me. So when you see an offer to earn points, use that exchange rate as a guide so you know how much you will actually make.

Is Swagbucks a Scam?

I developed 8 Signs of Internet Scams after getting suckered a few times. Once I started to follow these guidelines, I have not been scammed since. I always weight them against any program or offer before I buy. Swagbucks passes all 8 Signs. After joining and using the site, I can assure you that it is not a scam.

Pros vs Cons

Pros:

  • Free to join.
  • Free to use.
  • Easy to sign up and use.
  • You can earn points for things you already do online.
  • You earn rewards for signing up (currently 30 points).
  • Mobile site.
  • Many different ways to earn points.

Cons:

  • The mobile site has limited features.
  • It takes a long time to build points.
  • The games aren’t that fun.
  • Bad support.
  • You won’t always get points for your purchases
  • Earning points for searches is kind of random. One time I received 50 points but most of the time I don’t earn any.
  • You won’t earn any real money doing this.

Who is Swagbucks For?

Swagbucks is really for anyone who uses the internet. It is designed to be user friendly and allow you to do all your web activity through the Swagbucks site.

Who Swagbucks is Not For?

Swagbucks is not for anyone who wants to make decent money online. If you’re looking for a way to build your wealth, don’t waste your time with Swagbucks. You can never get a refund of the time you spend on endeavors that don’t pay off. This is why I don’t recommend Swagbucks for anything but casual use.

Why I Don’t Use it Anymore.

While Swagbucks is legit. I stopped using it for several reasons.

  • The games aren’t that fun and don’t always give you points for playing. There are fun games on the internet, I just didn’t enjoy any on Swagbucks.
  • I clicked through the Amazon link to make a purchase and I never received the points. When you click through their site to a business like Amazon, Swagbucks typically gets a commission like any other affiliate program. Since they didn’t give me the points, I’m not going to keep making commissions for them until I get a cut of it.
  • The earnings are not worth the time investment. For example, most of the surveys offer 1 or 2 Swagbucks and they take a few minutes to complete. If they only take 3 minutes each then I can do 20 in an hour. If we get 2 Swagbucks for every survey then we make 40 Swagbucks an hour. Since each Swagbuck is about $0.01, we are making $0.40 an hour. You get a higher value for some web searches but the most I received for one search was 50 points. I earned 0 points for most of my searches so it’s just not worth the time.

Swagbucks Comparison: The Swagbucks Review

Wealthy Affiliate is the #1 way to learn to make money online so before I complete the Swagbucks review I will see how it compares. I did this comparison to show you how Swagbucks stacks up against the #1 program.

As you can see, Swagbucks just isn’t the best option to make money online. To be fair, these two programs are not in the same category in many ways. But this comparison is important to understand that if you are serious about making money online, there is a much better alternative to Swagbucks.

Conclusion: The Swagbucks Review

If you want to join Swagbucks and play around with the site, you can do it risk free. You’ll earn 30 points for signing up. Then you’ll get points when you start web browsing at first. As you use the site more, the points get more sparse. To their credit, Swagbucks never claims to be a way to start an online business.

They do make is seem like you’ll make decent money, which you won’t.

For this reason, I only recommend Swagbucks if you use it casually. I wouldn’t play the games unless you enjoy them. You can use the web browsing but don’t expect many points doing it. I wouldn’t bother with the surveys because they’re just not worth the time.
